The 2010 Board Meeting/Planning Meeting for EMYC was held on Tuesday, 12/8/09 at Paul Olsen’s home in Bloomington, MN. Members that were present: Paul Olsen, Vice Commodore; Kevin Waldo, Vice Commodore; Dick Walker, Vice Commodore; Don Wesley, Vice Commodore; Joe Steele, Commodore; Larry Wheeler, Treasurer; Julia Moen, Secretary; Kurt Oldenburg; Dan Lewandowski; John Bishop and Tony Johnson. John Bishop was named the Chairman for Parade of Boats; Dan Lewandowski was named the Fleet Captain for scale models and Tony Johnson was named the Fleet Captain for sail boats.
Joe gave the floor to Dan Lewandowski to discuss ideas for the scale models portion of the club. Dan suggested putting on mini training sessions in March or April to show people how to make their own items or equipment instead of buying new. (Example given was making battery packs). Dick Walker suggested that we do a Saturday event or have show-n-tell in more detail at the meetings. A Photo Day was suggested by Dan of the captains with their boats so people would know who owns what boats. John Bishop and Kurt Oldenburg would be taking the photos and sending all the information to Dale Johnson and Julia Moen.
John Bishop took over the meeting regarding Parade of Boats. Centennial Lakes & City of Edina provides the rooms, tables, microphones, etc. for the event so all we are responsible for is the food and beverages. In the past, Tim Smalley had connections in TV for advertising for the event but his connection moved on, so we are checking into other options for advertising, such as Sun Publications.
We need to have balance and be proactive for the Parade of Boats. Dan suggested that Hub Hobby and Parade of Boats team up this year. It seems like never enough boats are running in the event, and the time line is too short. Instead of having 8 – _ hour we should have 4 – 1 hour. Also, Dan suggested that we have premier boats (class boats) this year as part of the event. Kevin Waldo suggested contacting other clubs for ideas. We discussed having hobby shops and manufacturers put on demonstrations and/or have items for sale at the Parade of Boats in a specified area outside. The businesses would need to be contacted early in the year to set this up. Some people think that this would be more of a sales event but for the interested visitors to the event it could be a very positive idea especially for potential new club members. John Bishop suggested that we have a time period for non-members to run members boats for audience participation and Dan suggested we have a People Choice Award (audience would vote for their favorite boat). John Bishop is going to contact manufacturers. A moderator or speaker for the event is needed and the suggestion of Tim Smalley was made. It was mentioned that someone would talk to him at the April meeting. Club member events are important to introduce the club to new people. Dick suggested that we have classes on building boats, extension of the Parade of Boats Building Corner, to further assist people on building boats. At the meetings, it was suggested that we have a club member to speak with the new member person and guide them to the member that would be available for guidance on their boat questions.
Tony Johnson then took over the meeting regarding sailing boats. Dan suggested we have a training session (hands-on) and/or a demo day to take sail boats around the mark. There are 4 or 5 basic rules to sailing and these would be covered in these sessions. Tuesdays and Thursdays are normally days for sails at Centennial Lakes. It was also suggested having an event “Intro to Sailing”.
Paul Olson is going to talk to someone regarding weathering for the January meeting. We will be sending letters to all members (past and present) in the January newsletter with membership forms for
dues and to make sure all our information is correct.
The chairmen for the Dry Dock party will be Larry Wheeler and Don Wesley. It was suggested that we have a want to buy and sell section in the newsletters. Julia was asked to contact “What’s About Town” magazine in Edina with the club calendar and events for 3 months. A family outing at Rick’s Hobby Farm was suggested and it was agreed to follow-up on the idea. Kurt Oldenburg was asked to check at 3M, where he works, to have someone from there to do a presentation at a meeting. 3M has a lot of products that the members currently use.
The discussion about having real-time filming at the meetings so that all show-n-tell or etc. can be seen by everyone at the meeting, therefore Dan is going to be researching projectors with the capability and several people have screens available for use. The meeting then turned to the facility that we use at the meetings (the band room). Dick Walker volunteered to speak with Tom Shirley to see what other arrangements can be made for our monthly meetings.
The meeting adjourned approximately 9:30 pm.
